Hobby Ideas is an independent UK hobby magazine created by a small team of people who genuinely enjoy collecting, making things, getting outdoors and discovering new interests.
Our aim is simple: to help people find hobbies they will actually enjoy and give them the practical information they need to get started.
We cover everything from collecting and crafts to walking, photography, astronomy and outdoor pursuits. Some articles draw directly on hobbies members of our team have enjoyed for years, while others are researched with the same curiosity that brings our readers to Hobby Ideas in the first place.
Meet The Hobby Team
Hobby Ideas is a team effort, with different interests, experiences and perspectives contributing to the magazine.
Steve
Steve is a keen metal detectorist, stamp collector and coin enthusiast, with a long-standing interest in antiques and collectables. He particularly enjoys the research and detective work behind collecting — identifying objects, discovering their history and occasionally finding something unexpected. Steve runs an antiques shop, Antiques And Homes, in Norfolk, and loves chatting to his customers about times past. Steve also enjoys, Archery, Sea Fishing, and Gilding in his spare time.
His interests make him particularly at home with our collecting, antiques and metal detecting features.
Gret
Gret is Steves partner, and the creative member of the team and loves crafting and making things. She also sells some of her creations at fairs and online, giving her practical experience of taking a creative hobby beyond simply making things for herself. Grett also enjoys reading and cooking when time allows.
She brings that hands-on perspective to our craft, creative hobby and hobby-selling content.
Glyn
Glyn would generally rather be outdoors. A keen walker, cyclist and camper for 30 years, he brings practical experience to the outdoor side of Hobby Ideas.
From getting out for a simple walk to spending time camping and exploring further afield, his interests help keep our outdoor articles grounded in what people actually enjoy doing.
Tabatha
Tabatha’s interests combine the outdoors with observing the world around her. She enjoys astronomy, photography, birdwatching, foraging and hiking.
That combination makes her particularly interested in hobbies that encourage you to slow down, look more closely and discover what is around you, whether that means the night sky, wildlife, a landscape or something edible growing in the countryside.
How We Create Hobby Ideas
We believe useful hobby writing should do more than repeat information that can already be found everywhere else.
Where a subject matches a member of the team’s experience, we draw on that knowledge and the things they have learned from actually doing the hobby. For other subjects, we research carefully and use reliable specialist and official sources where appropriate.
We also believe in being clear about the difference. Enjoying several hobbies does not make anyone an expert in everything, and we will never pretend otherwise.
The result should be straightforward, useful advice written for real people rather than an instruction manual.
What You’ll Find at Hobby Ideas
You’ll find practical guides for trying something new, collecting advice, creative projects, outdoor activities and ideas for quieter hobbies at home. We also explore ways hobbies can occasionally earn a little money, while recognising that making money certainly doesn’t have to be the point of having one.
Some hobbies cost very little. Others can become lifelong passions. Plenty turn out not to be for you at all.
Finding out is part of the fun.
Who Hobby Ideas Is For
Hobby Ideas is for beginners, experienced hobbyists looking for something different, collectors, makers, weekend potterers and anyone who occasionally finds themselves thinking:
“I need something new to do.”
You don’t need to become an expert, buy piles of equipment or turn your hobby into a side hustle. Sometimes spending a couple of enjoyable hours doing something purely because you like it is reason enough.
